Breaking Patterns

It’s all about making the shift that you need to make to walk in the freedom that God has for you! Perception plays a significant part in how we see and our understanding of how to truly walk in freedom. In Ephesians 1:17, it says, “Open the eyes of their hearts, and let the light of Your truth flood in.

“Freedom- the ability to act and react in life as the man or woman you were created to be.” To do that, we need the light of His truth to flood every part of us.

In the movie The Matrix, Neo asks Morpheus why his eyes hurt, and Morpheus responds, “You have never used them.” You see, when we get saved, our eyes are opened, and we begin to look at life completely different. The eyes of our hearts open, and our perspective changes.

You see, you can try to become free by changing your behavior. You can learn coping mechanisms to deal with the heaviness in your heart. You could learn strategies of self talk to keep your emotions from running wild. You can stop destructive behaviors but still not be free!

John 8:32- And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Truth isn’t knowing a set of facts or doctrine; truth is to know the One who is the source of truth. Jesus! Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” TRUTH IS THE COMPASS!

What are the obstacles that get in the way of knowing the truth?

A. Expectations–  All of our input passes through our preset mindsets of God, ourselves, others. Sometimes God is trying to do something, but we can’t see it because it doesn’t fit into our expectations.

B. Familiarity – Familiarity is a filter that we wear in many areas of our lives. Often it causes us to be unaware of things until someone points them out. Unfortunately, people, routines, relationships, and religious systems can all numb us to sleep. In Luke 4, they were so familiar with Jesus; they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Their familiarity with Him as Joseph’s son made them numb to the fact that He was the King of Kings!

C. Tradition – The twin of familiarity is, tradition. You’ve probably heard a time or two in your life, “This is how we have always done it.”

D. Rigidity– Familiarity becomes tradition, and unbending tradition becomes rigidity. Rigidity, we have always done it that way, and not doing it how we do is evil or wrong. The major problem with rigidity is, rigidity doesn’t allow for change, growth, context, priority, or any of the factors that influence life.

So expectations, familiarity, tradition, and rigidity serve as weapons against us in our battle for freedom.

The good news is that we can break free from the patterns and all the things that numb us by making a shift! We can take hold of the new and let go of the old.   As a son or a daughter of the Father, the presence of God, is the single most important factor that allows us to reconnect with our true identity and to overcome the obstacles to grow into our true purpose.

Everything hinges on this truth, Jesus came to set us free!
