Summer of Freedom

Freedom From Obstacles

Stories of Freedom

Romans 7:15-23

For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

So what kind of obstacles block freedom?

Even at this stage in our series definitions still matter.

Obstacles are never our circumstances

They are not around us but with in us.

In the book, Man’s search for meaning by Victor Frankel

Demonstrated how even residents of Death Camps during World War 2 had the opportunity to be free.

They were free to choose to be themselves regardless of circumstance and how they were treated.

That is the mark of true freedom!

Two types of Obstacles

They are not as clear cut as you might think as they overlap in so many ways but hopefully today as we look at them we can see that we can be free from them.

  1.  Natural Obstacles

Internal agreement

Have you ever said?

I know this to be true in my mind, but it feels like it is not true.

Why do I keep doing this one thing that I really do not want to do?

If you have done that you have experienced Internal Disagreement.

We have a mind not just a brain.

Our brain gathers information from the 5 senses, records it, retrieves it, and sends impulses to our body accordingly.  Our brain is the physical organ that our mind uses.  Our mind is more than just a container of programmed thoughts

Our mind interprets our thoughts

Evaluates them

Makes plans

This is the part of ourself that we are most aware of because we are thinking all day long.  We also make observations and reason out their meaning.

We have feelings and experience a range of emotions whether we think we do or not.  And even if we are not comfortable with them we DO have feelings.

This is how we experience being ourselves in any given moment or situation.  It feels good.  It feels bad.

In the church world we have heard for years that our feelings will deceive us.

People who are afraid of their emotions can use this idea to distance themselves from feelings that are uncomfortable.

I want to state today that your feelings will always tell you the truth.

Not necessarily the truth about reality, but the truth about what we believe.

Our feelings come from the heart, which is where belief is generated.  Not the organ that pumps blood

But rather the part of us that contains our deepest convictions and beliefs that reveal who we are.

Proverbs 23:7

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.

What we believe in our heart true or false is what we become.

Our heart also houses our conscience that monitors the mind and the spirit to keep us on the right track.

We also have a will

A decider

These three make up our soul

Our mind, our will, and our emotions

Our personality is the image of that soul

So how do we keep an internal agreement

It is the breath or the Spirit of the one who made us

This is why the battle ground is to stay on the road map

And why the devil

The divider

The divisor

Is always trying to divide and conquer.

It is the Spirit of God that brings all of this into unity

it is the role of the Spirit to bring all of the aspects of us into one accord.

Before Christ when we were just connected to our own understanding of good and evil we could never bring this together.

But connected to the power source in a relationship with God the Spirit reveals truth to our soul and begins to put the pieces together.

So here are some of the encountered in the battleground of our soul

Core Lies

Are the ones that attack our identity

They are things said or implied over and over

Lies like this tell you who to be

They are reinforce by repetition because if we hear something long enough it eventually seems true.

You are ugly

Nobody will ever love you

You will never be safe

These are also strengthened by trauma

Loss of a parent

A violent act that is witnessed

These experiences can forcefully imprint upon the soul whatever lie is attached to the event.

The antidote to a lie is not information, it is experiencing the love of the One who is truth.

Soul Wounds

The effect of trauma on any part of the soul.

This wound also provides the fertile soil for the lies mentioned already to take root.

Because of the intensity the lies are more deeply imprinted.

If we don’t know how to connect to the One who can heal us then we will try to become our own source of hearing.

The soul can only rearrange itself around the wound.

Life Patterns

So we live a life of self fulfilling prophesies

As we surround the wound so that we wont be hurt

We actually hurt

Hurting people hurt people.

We put up so many defense systems that people cant get to us so we perceive that they are rejecting us but the reality is they can get through the guard that you have set up.  And you can’t figure out why no one wants to be your friend.

2. Spiritual Obstacles

The term spiritual obstacles does not refer to religious or moral obstacles.  It refers to factors within the spiritual realm that may prevent us from becoming who we are.

The spiritual real is invisible

We live in a intellectual and material society

Western thinking our primary channel is observation of the physical world.

At the same time that we are skeptical of the invisible

We use cell phones, radio, wireless internet, without a second thought.

Interacting with invisible forces

The first principle of interacting in the spiritual realm is the power of agreement.

The radio signal

The closer we are to the frequency the more clear the station

Spirit forces are empowered by agreement

Like matching up to a frequency broadcasts a radio station

Every time Jesus says the Kingdom of God is like.  He is giving us the frequency for how to tune into His kingdom.

How Does God Feel about them?

Some significant frequencies in His Kingdom are

Love is a huge signal when we love we are tuned into His Kingdom

When our hearts are turned in any other direction besides love then we begin to empower the kingdom of darkness.

When we forgive we break we break an agreement with the kingdom of darkness.

God feels one way about people

The devil feels another way about people with whom will we agree?

If we dwell on fear, fear is empowered

Dwell on love and fear is casts out.

Move closer to the signal

Another Spiritual Obstacle

The existence of evil

Evil is real

Evil is a spiritual entity

Evil operates undercover and its primary weapon is deception

The most difficult enemy to defeat is the one that you don’t acknowledge exists.

When Germany started occupying the islands around England

Keith Green

Oh, my job keeps getting easier

As time keeps slipping away

I can imitate your brightest light

And make your night look just like day

I put some truth in every lie

To tickle itching ears

You know I’m drawing people just like flies

‘Cause they like what they hear

I’m gaining power by the hour

They’re falling by the score

You know, it’s getting very simple now

‘Cause no one believe in me anymore

Oh, heaven’s just a state of mind

My books read on your shelf

And have you heard that God is dead?

I made that one up myself

They dabble in magic spells

They get their fortunes read

You know they heard the truth

But turned away and followed me instead

I used to have to sneak around

But now they just open their doors

You know, no ones watching for my tricks

Because no one believes in me anymore

Everyone likes a winner

With my help, you’re guaranteed to win

And hey, man, you ain’t no sinner

You’ve got the truth within

And as your life slips by

You believe the lie that you did it on your own

But don’t worry

I’ll be there to help you share our dark eternal home

Oh, my job keeps getting easier

As day slips into day

The magazines, the newspapers

Print every word I say

This world is just my spinning top

It’s all like childs-play

You know, I dream that it will never stop

But I know it’s not that way

Still my work goes on and on

Always stronger than before

I’m gonna make it dark before the dawn

Since no one believes in me anymore

Well, now I used to have to sneak around

But now they just open their doors

You know, no one watches for my tricks

Since no one believes in me anymore

Well I’m gaining power by the hour

They’re falling by the score

You know, it’s getting very easy now

Since no one believes in me anymore

No one believes in me anymore

No one believes in me anymore

How do we confront and resist evil?

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

We’ve all got our demons

This phrase usually has to do with someone who has an addiction and has not been able to overcome it.

Hollywood and religious goof balls have not helped us to understand this

Because they sensationalize everything

Jesus was seeking first the kingdom of God and along the way he encountered all types of things but don’t let movies or others tell you how it is supposed to be let Jesus be your teacher.

He took authority over darkness and always defeated it as He was calling sons and daughters back to His Father.

Jesus did not come to be served

I know you are trapped

If you also know you are trapped

Please realize I am here to help

If you don’t think you are trapped

I still have a great deal to offer you but you may not want it

What Jesus did when He came to the earth He still does

He heals the broken

He heals the broken hearted

He releases prisoners

He gives sight to those who realize they cannot see

He restores to us wholeheartedness

He restores wholeness

He does for us what we cannot do for ourselves
