Breaking Patterns

It is all about a shift

Open the eyes of our hearts and let us see!  Paul

Ephesians 1:17-21

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

The Voice Translation

Ephesians 1:17-21

God of our Lord Jesus the Anointed, Father of Glory: I call out to You on behalf of Your people. Give them minds ready to receive wisdom and revelation so they will truly know You. Open the eyes of their hearts, and let the light of Your truth flood in. Shine Your light on the hope You are calling them to embrace. Reveal to them the glorious riches You are preparing as their inheritance. Let them see the full extent of Your power that is at work in those of us who believe, and may it be done according to Your might and power. Friends, it is this same might and resurrection power that He used in the Anointed One to raise Him from the dead and to position Him at His right hand in heaven. There is nothing over Him. He’s above all rule, authority, power, and dominion; over every name invoked, over every title bestowed in this age and the next.

Perception: how we see things has been a major part of our understanding of how to truly walk in freedom.

“Freedom is the ability to act and react in life as the man or woman you were created to be”

Hear these words that all have to do with seeing

Open the eyes of their hearts

Shine your light on the hope

Reveal to them

Let them see the full extent of your power

Neo:  Why do my eyes hurt

Morpheus:  You have never used them.

The Matrix

1.  What happened?

When someone gets set free and we see a life completely changed and transformed that is the question that we ask and then we think okay how do I reproduce that so it happens to me?

That question just frustrates us because it has no power to reproduce what happened in them in us.

  How did it happen?

The opportunity for us to have a similar experience is embedded in the answer to that question.

What happened?, to someone who is transformed and set free it is clear they become their true Identity as a Son or a Daughter to the Father.  In living the life God created us to live we shift from doing to being.

You see you can try to become free by changing your behavior.  I am going to control my anger and not get into fights.  You can learn coping mechanisms to deal with the heaviness in your heart.  You could learn strategies of self talk to keep your emotions from running wild.  You can stop destructive behaviors but still not be free!

“Freedom is the ability to act and react in life as the man or woman you were created to be”

This can only happen when we have been restored to be able to live that way.

How did this happen?  This is the right question

Those who are truly set free begin to see differently.

Remember that after identity it is perception that is the next stop on our road map

Remember the road map

Identity > Perception > Desire > Choice > Action > Experience > Impact

Its when we change the way we see that everything comes into focus

John 8:32

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Let me say it this way: Now we can begin to know the truth and the truth that we know will make us free.

I am not talking about just knowing a set of facts

Like a collective set of facts like doctrine

While facts and doctrine maybe accurate and therefore true it does not mean that it has the inherent power to make us free.

Truth is as much a way of knowing as it is what we know.

Truth isn’t the destination it is the compass that we travel with to get there.

Truth is not subjective it is grounded to the core.

Just like a plumb line is anchored by gravity in the core of the earth.

When we compare other things to the plumb line

We can truly see what is crooked and what is straight.

So to know the truth is to know the One who is the source of truth.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Coming to know the truth is central to the war we are engaged in.

Surrendering to the viewpoint of the one who is truth, who is bigger, smarter, stronger, and kinder.  Who can do what we cannot do for ourselves in this battle that is how we get grounded to the core.

2.  What are our obstacles to knowing?

Ways of knowing that keep us from translating true information into real truth.

a. Expectations

 a preset mind set

Like a contact lens that lays over our understanding all input passes through our expectations

Identity > Perception > Desire > Choice > Action > Experience > Impact

Expectations are wrapped up in our perceptions of

And the world in general

They can be a lens or a filter

Like a lens we look through it but we rarely look at it.

Often what does not fit our expectations is filtered out not by conscious choice but by our mind’s failure to see what does not fit.

We have a tendency to screen out what does not correlate with our expectations and perceptions.

Here is a great example of this from scripture.

The religious leaders of Jesus day

They were expecting a King, that meant palace, well known royal linage, nobody would have called those expectations that was just how life worked so that was how it was going to happen.

manger, shepherd, unknown teenage girl, that we find so endearing acted as a filter over the eyes of the religious community.  They were not trying to ignore the birth of the Messiah they couldn’t see it because they  were not expecting it to happen that way.

filter, lens, brick wall between us and the truth that makes us free.

b. Familiarity

Winlock and the train

I never noticed them unless someone pointed it out or something fell off the walls.

Luke 4:21-22

And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

No miracles and a few healing’s

Familiarity is a filter that we all wear in many areas of our lives.

Our morning walk

Our return trip to Oregon for the first time September 1982

The religious people of the the day slept walked right through the visitation of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

You have heard it said but I say to you

Religious systems

Can all numb us to sleep

The struggles of life act as a wake up call sometimes

c. Tradition

This is the twin of familiarity

Things start out exciting and fresh then over time just become something that we do.

Cooking ham, why do we cut the end off the ham?

Thats the way my Mom always did it

Grandma I had small pans

d. Rigidity

Familiarity becomes tradition and unbending tradition becomes rigidity

We have always done it that way and not doing it that way is evil.

This is a way of thinking that stifles life

The pharisee’s believed that a crippled woman should stay crippled

Because people were not supposed to work on the sabbath (including healing)

Jesus healed her because He had a bigger understanding of the day

What its true purpose was supposed to be.

Rigidity is not the same as order though its proponents would say that it is.

It does not allow for change, growth, context, priority or any one of the factors that influence life.

Building a building to rigid can lead to a collapse during an earthquake.

So Expectations, familiarity, tradition, and rigidity serve as weapons against us in our battle for freedom.

Jesus came to set the captives free!

Our enemy has done all he can to war against that message

He has assaulted the way in which we think about Jesus

Trying to confuse us in the way we perceive reality

But truth has a way of rising to the top just like cream

3. Breaking patterns by shifting to the one target that matters

To shift we have to take hold of new things and let go of old things

Take hold of the truth and shake off the lies.

What is this one target?

This thing that is opposed more than any other

Once you take this one issue and settle it in your heart

It is like taking the beach head that the rest of the war is won on.

The Ball Story

Matthew 1:23

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

God is with us

Today he is here

He is among us the human race

And He is ready and willing to act and to speak

Somehow we constantly lose sight of this fact

As Paul said in our text

Open the eyes of their hearts

Shine your light on the hope

Reveal to them

Let them see the full extent of your power

That you are here right now to connect and interact with us

How do we lose sight of this?

Because we ask the wrong questions in the church

Does God still heal today?

What should a worship service look like?

Should we raise our hands?

Is God with us?  Then as a son or a daughter of the father the very presence of God, is the single most factor that allows us to reconnect with our true identity and to overcome the obstacles and to grow into our true purpose.

If you are outside the church world and not serving God

Then the questions sound more like this

What does the church have to do with my life?

Aren’t all Christians hypocrites?

Why are Christians so intolerant?

But the true question that needs to be asked is

Is God with us?  Or is He far away?

Everything hinges on this truth

If God is with us?  He wants to interact with you, He wants to bring freedom to your life, He has a true identity for you one that is the only true and lasting identity so that you can become who you were always intended to be and fulfill the true purpose of your life.
