Step Across the Line

Step Across the Line

Journey with Jesus: The Resurrection
Step across the line!

Romans 6:3-11
Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 2:1-10
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Colossians 2:12
buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

The baptism of John was a baptism of repentance

Turn and walk a new direction

They did not understand the full concept of repentance until Christ rose from the dead.

We die with him at the cross

We are buried in the tomb with Him

We are raised with Him in His resurrection

Baptism is a picture of that to your world.  It is an outward sign to your world of the work that Christ has done in you.

In America:   it is an event we invite people to, we take pictures, we give you a certificate.

In other countries you could be signing your death warrant.

My experience in India.

We step across the line to be identified with Jesus

Romans 6:4-5
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,

Our identity is such a big deal

As a Christian, Christ is our identity

You were created in the image of God

That was lost

Christ has restored it

When you are baptized it is your first public opportunity to testify that you are now Christ’s

We step across the line to tell our world there is a new sheriff in my heart

Ephesians 2:1-6
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

You walked according to the course of this world

You walked according to the prince of the power of the air

The same spirit that works in the sons of disobedience

Lust of the flesh

Fulfilling the desires of the flesh

Desires of our mind

Our whole nature was the same as children of wrath

But God is the new sheriff

He is rich in mercy

He has loved us with His great love even when we were dead to Him

And when we didn’t deserve it He saved us, raised us, and made us alive together with Jesus when He rose from the dead.

Today we sit together in heavenly places because we are with the new sheriff.

We step across the line in obedience

As a church we step across the line in obedience when we baptize those who come to faith in Christ.

Matthew 28:19-20
It is a two way street the convert is to walk in obedience and follow Christ’s example of baptism. But the church has to lead the way.

Many consider it out dated

Too much trouble

Too divisive

Too misunderstood

I don’t find it any of those things

I see it as a step of faith in your new walk with Christ and our first chance to confess with our mouth what we now believe in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead.

So as a church we step across the line following the resurrected savior and as a convert we ask you to follow along.
