His Last Days the Power of Faith Hope and Love Part 7

His Last Days the Power of Faith Hope and Love Part 7

His Last Days the Power of Faith Hope and Love Part 7

Two men die in this chapter one shows us the power of Faith Hope and love.

The other shows us the power of Rejection Despair and Hatred.

  1. The Power of Rejection Despair and Hatred

Matthew 27:1-10

When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it! ” Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

  1. Hatred always relies on the political powers to justify actions.

Matthew 27:1-2

When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

The ultimate hatred is killing children

Abortion has used the Political smoke screen since 1973 to kill 69 Million babies just in America

This hatred is shown racially as more babies are murdered in minority neighborhoods therefore it is the most racist thing that can be done to a community but it hides behind politics.

What is our weapon against hate?  You are seeing it lived out right here by Jesus it is Love!!! Love is our greatest weapon Jesus set us the example even as political powers conspired against them he loved them and died for them.

  1. Rejection is always looking for acceptance

Matthew 27:3-4

Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!

What we see here is not repentance

There is no metanoia

It is,  I messed up and I can fix it myself

This is literally the very problem that Jesus is coming to solve

It is the original sin

I can do this myself

How do we try to fix our rejections

We seek for acceptance

How does that work out for us

A child of an alcoholic is more prone to become an alcoholic

A child of a convict is more prone to become a convict

A child who is rejected craves what it cant have acceptance

A man rejected by his wife seeks acceptance in pornography

  1. The end game is always despair

Matthew 27:5

Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.

The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy

Judas commits suicide

It is speculated that Pontius Pilate committed suicide 3 years later when he was recalled to Rome to answer for atrocities committed against the Samaritans

Satan wanted Jesus to commit suicide

Matthew 4:5-7

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

Now in Jesus’s last moments He strikes again trying to take him out before He can get to the cross and save mankind.

Matthew 27:34

they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.

I always heard this spoke as he would not allow alcohol on his lips

That blinds us to what is happening here

Myrrh is a perfume and also a narcotic

But gall is a posion

Is this satan’s last effort to take Jesus out

He failed when He was a baby

He failed in the storm

He failed in the wilderness

He failed right here!  Jesus would not drink it!!!

Despair did not have a hold of Jesus He was acting out of a different Spirit.  One of faith hope and love.

2.  The Power of Faith Hope and Love

Matthew 27:33-54

And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink. Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. And they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left. And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing. Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.” And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

1.  Faith

Matthew 27:35b

that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:

With every step that Jesus took towards the cross he was fulfilling the Word of God

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God

This is the last time that Matthew uses his signature words that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet.  He could of said this many many more times in the last chapter and half but this is it and let it be a lesson for us

Our faith is built on the Word of God

Standing on the Word

We have declared the Word

We preach the Word

We pray the Word

We sing the Word

As we see what Jesus is doing for us today as He is being crucified let see that faith says I cant do it by myself I must trust Jesus to solve my problems.

2. Hope

Matthew 40b- 46

save Yourself! And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?

These are the words that our enemy would like us to think that we can do

Save yourself

Jesus is the savior

And at a time when it looked like all hope was lost

He cannot save

Let Him deliver Him now

He said He was the Son of God

At your darkest hour remember this

At noon it got as dark as night for three hours in darkness Jesus hung there.  It looked like there was not hope

He understands that He is forsaken

Please see this He who knew no sin became our sin

The Father could not look at sin

Sin Died on that cross

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Hope lives

Matthew 27:51-54

Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

The thing that kept us from the presence of the Lord is ripped in two

People were raised a picture of our resurrection

Truly this was the Son of God!

3. Love

Matthew 27:26

Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.

This is a picture of us

Barabbas represents all of us

He was guilty

Jesus was innocent

This is His love for us

The finished work of the cross

He walked up the hill to Golgotha the place of the skull

Golgotha is Hebrew for skull

Calvary is latin for skull

Calvary says it all!!!  Faith Hope and Love!!!
