His Last Days The Power of Faith, Hope, and Love Part 3

8 Woes

a condition of deep suffering from misfortune, affliction, or grief. 2 : ruinous trouble : calamity, affliction economic woes.

These woes are spoken to the Scribes and Pharisees

The religious rulers of Jesus day

We are in the last week of Jesus life

Everything He does is of hyper importance

Todays message in Matthew 23 will actually be the last of His public ministry.  Take that into consideration as you consider how important his words are.

I want to flip the switch a little bit in that we need to pronounce these woes to the religious bones in us.

Tell the devil no more religion

No more legalism

No more lies

1.  Matthew 23:13

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

Open up the gates of righteousness

Psalm 118:19-20

Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them, And I will praise the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord, Through which the righteous shall enter.

2.  Matthew 23:14

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

Do the work of a servant

Humble yourself He will lift you up

3.  Matthew 23:15

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

They made converts to Pharisees not to Judaism

We need to be disciples worth multiplying

4.  Matthew 23:16

“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.

Don’t play games with God

If you made a commitment keep it

If you said yes do your yes

5. Matthew 23:23

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

Take care of first things first

Psalm 15:1-5

Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart; He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; In whose eyes a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear the Lord; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change; He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

6.  Matthew 23:25

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.

Clean the inside of the cup

Fill your heart with Christ

Walk in His forgiveness

God will take care of the outside

7.  Matthew 23:27

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

Christianity is a matter of relationship with the Father

It is an inside job

Don’t spend all your time cleaning and painting the outside when its the inside that counts.

8. Matthew 23:29

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,

Take responsibility for yourself by humbling yourself.

Except for the grace of God so go I

I would have done what my forefathers did kill the prophets if it were not for Jesus’ Grace

His Tears, His Sorrow, His Lament

Matthew 23:37-39

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

This is the end of His public ministry every thing else would be private instructions.

The Power of Faith, Hope, and Love

The amazing picture of Jesus likening Himself to a Mother Hen

Wanting to gather his children together

And place them under His wings

A hen does such an amazing job of keeping her chicks warm

She will sit tirelessly and carefully spreading her wings to keep her chicks warm and alive.

If we come to Christ we have not only warmth but comfort and safety in our powerful God, there is no fear in Love.

There is nothing like hiding yourself away in God

There I find Faith

There I have hope

There I experience Love

When troubles come and they will

When affliction or loss comes

God is covering me

Nothing can satisfy me like my God

How do people live with out Him

Don’t you find yourself asking that question

How could I go through this with out Jesus?

So in His Lament to Jerusalem

He says I would but you would not

So let me illustrate this by asking a few questions

  1. What is God to those who come to Him?
  • You find a family

A faith family

We are all under His wings together

Brothers, sisters, A Father, a elder brother, a sweet Holy Spirit.

  • You find safety

Hope is your home

Psalm 91:4

He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

Safe from the hawks

  • You find a fountain of Love

You don’t mess with my chicks

She may be timid at all other times but when someone messes with her chicks look out

2. What does God do to gather men?

  • He makes Himself known to us
  • He uses His servants that He has called
  • He uses the circumstances of our lives for Peter it was a rooster crowing

3.  What do men need to make them come to God?

Remember in our text He would but they would not

  • So you have to have a willingness to come

That requires a willingness to give up your sins to God

A willingness to give up your self righteousness to God

Remember the problem that Jesus came to solve from the Garden is I can do this myself.

  • You need to have an immediate will

I need to make this right right now

  • You need a settled will

You are going to settle the issue once and for all

  • You need a submissive will

There is only one way to God

It is to accept what Christ had done for me by faith and receive His grace

My good works wont get me to Him

Being a Good person has nothing to do with becoming a Christian.

Wont you come to him today!!!
